This year was my first time at the Future Leaders Program, and I know for certain that it won’t be my last. Though I have participated in events run by the BDCC since the age of 8, the Future Leaders Program was something I have never been able to experience before.  From the moment we arrived, the volunteers eagerly supported us, helping to bond and create community. They also did the even more challenging task of educating us on insurance, policies, lobbying, etc. By the end of our time together I felt like I had taken a whole year of AP Gov, but way more fun.

It wasn’t just educational (thankfully), we were able to bond with each other and the city itself. A beautiful mural walk and dinners connected us with the culture and history of Sacramento, but my favorite part was all of the friends I got to make. Having a bleeding disorder, especially as a woman, can become lonely at times. Creating relationships at events like these reminds me I have a community behind me. One that has provided me support, and one that I will hopefully be able to support back.
